Design process

I apply the philosophies of Design Thinking and Lean Startup in most daily work; and as a UX design expert, I always like to visualize the whole process so that I can have an overview before going into detailed steps.

In fact, the UX design process can be illustrated very differently by different companies, in other words, each company will define and choose its own set of UX design processes, and from there also illustrate it in a unique way. However, at the core, no matter what framework you find online, the UX design process includes the same steps as in the Design Thinking process: Empathize - Define - Ideate - Prototype - Test.

My favorite point about this illustration is that the steps are connected in a circle. This process, like Design Thinking or Lean Startup, is not a linear process (step after step after step), which is a continuous loop. This is also what I always emphasize when working with startups.

Let's dive deeper into the steps.

1. Develop UX strategy

This step revolves around planning and development steps for your product.

The UX strategy needs to ensure that the vision of the business is aligned with the needs of the customer, as well as the technical capabilities of the startup.

You also need to set a long-term goal to guide your development, ensuring you stay on track. Here are some questions to help with this process:

➤ Why did you start this project? Why do you want to build this feature/ product/ service?

➤ What is the long-term vision of your company? Think back 3-5 years.

What is your ➤ plan for building this new product/ feature?

What will the product development ➤ process look like?

To answer these questions, you need to have discussions involving many members of the company to listen to the members' perspectives on the company's strategic vision. Customers are also the ones you need to talk to especially, because a lot of times the impression/ image they think of the company is completely different from what the founding team outlines, so be sure to collect customer feedback as well.

Your team is also important to ask. People participate in the company in part because they believe in the product or vision of the company, so it is important to ensure everyone is present in the strategic discussion, so that they can contribute to shaping the company vision.

Besides the company's long-term vision and goals, the process of building a UX strategy also ensures that the product you are building will match the needs and expectations of users.

UX strategists must put the user at the center. To ensure the product matches the user's needs, they often do UX research to test their assumptions, as well as identify problems to solve.

2. UX Research

UX research is the process of researching target users about their needs/ requirements, thereby adding valuable insights to the product design process.

This step is about making sure what you're building makes sense for users. Here, you'll answer these questions:

➤ Who are your target users?

➤ What devices/ products are they using?

What issues do ➤ they need to address? And how are they currently being addressed?

➤ Why are they using/ not using your product?

Research is the step that should be taken before any design or construction process. In my experience, most companies do not have enough resources or time to spend too much on this step. To solve this problem, you can mobilize a small team, or 1 member, in charge of UX design to implement before the UX research process, and then communicate the results to the Design and Product Development team.

Depending on the objectives of the project, the stage of operation of the company, and the available resources, the UX research process uses different methods and approaches to empathize with target users, collect insights about their needs and behaviors, and then incorporate those insights into the design process.

* UX research methods can be categorized into Quantitative research and Qualitative research.

Most UX research is starting with qualitative methods, ví dụ như phỏng vấn sâu và khảo sát.

Nghiên cứu định lượng is the next step after qualitative research, to quantify the information collected and confirm the assumptions you have built in the previous step on a large scale. The insights you collect from the interview will be included in the survey form and released on a large scale, to confirm whether the majority of target customers have the same problem, or have the same motivation. Another quantitative method is to examine and analyze data to understand user behavior on the website/ app/ platform.

3. Empathy

Chân dung khách hàng mục tiêu (user persona), hành trình người dùng (user journey), chuyển động của người dùng (user flows), bảng phân cảnh sản phẩm (product storyboard), yêu cầu cho sản phẩm (product requirement) are some of the tools that are commonly used during this period.

4. Thiết kế, phát triển, kiểm chứng và đánh giá

The last steps in the UX design process are quite similar to the Build - Measure - Learn loop in Lean Startup.

*****

“If you have questions about how your product should work, or what features need to be built, the answer is not in the six walls of the office, not on the whiteboard, and not in constant discussions with your teammates.

Your answer is somewhere out of the office, and the client will be the one to help you figure it out. You need to know how to learn from them. This is one of the most important notes of Lean Startup: you need to constantly test your assumptions with your customers to better understand them, so that you know how you need to build the product.”
